FACS History

The Florida Association of College Stores was formed to promote the interest of the bookstores and bookstore personnel throughout the state.  Its function is to service and help educate bookstore personnel and is open to all bookstores serving educational institutions in the state of Florida.

The Florida Association of College Stores was created to provide a professional relationship of vendors and bookstores at the state level.  The Vendor Product Show has become a unique link of this relationship at the FACS Annual Meetings.

The first meeting of the bookstore group was a bookstore seminar held from August 3-5, 1969 at the Ramada Inn in Gainesville.  This initial meeting was sponsored by the Committee on Auxiliaries of the Council of Business Affairs of Florida's Public Junior Colleges.

With the Constitution and first Governing Board in place, the first Annual Conference of the Florida Association of College Stores was held on March 10-12, 1971 at the Hilton Inn West in Orlando.  Some of the programs at the first meeting included: "Philosophy of the College Store; Operating Statement Analysis; Product Knowledge and Pilferage Control; Rush Time Operations; Determining the Selling Price; Shipping and Freight Customer Services."  Presenters included:  LaRue Werline, John Dannelly, George Mitchell, Everett Johnson, Tony Kendzior, Ian Maxwell, Helen Wendt and Christine Brolles.

The first Governing Board of FACS was comprised of:

  • President - John Dannelly, Miami-Dade Community College

  • Vice President/Treasurer - Everette Johnson, Stetson University

  • Secretary - Tony Kendzior, University of Florida

  • Member at Large - Helen Wendt, Broward Community College

  • Immediate Past President - Paul Webb, Brevard Community College

The Florida Association of College Stores Associates were formed shortly thereafter as a supportive group to FACS with its membership and officers made up from various manufactures, distributors and manufactures' representatives who sell books, apparel, services and supplies to the college store market.

Traditionally the meetings were scheduled near the end of February until recently when FACS/FACSA members preferred the meeting time changed to May.  FACS became incorporated in 2008. In 2009, FACS moved it's meetings to October.
